Maple Valley 11U select snags crown at first tournament of the year | Youth Sports

Cold, rainy weather was a factor.

But it wasn’t enough to cool the bats of the Maple Valley 11U Select baseball team over the weekend.

Behind steady pitching, strong defense and huge offensive performances by Brody Magbaleta and Nick Roes, Maple Valley rolled to four victories, including a 9-3 win over the B-Town Bombers of Burien in the championship game Sunday afternoon, to secure the title at the six-team

Hit the Turf tournament at Seatac’s Valley Ridge Park.

“Obviously, it’s hard to play in this weather, especially for the pitchers,” said coach Craig Bishop, noting that his team had to win a pair of 8:30 a.m. games – one on Saturday and another on Sunday – to earn a berth in the

championship game. “They battled through some tough things.”

It was Maple Valley’s first tournament of the season.

Starting pitcher Joey Peterson delivered two strong innings in the championship game to pick up the win. Righthander Jacob Butler added two innings of relief to notch the hold while Asher Walker nailed down the save with a

perfect fifth and sixth inning.

“Even when (the Bombers) got runners on, our pitchers were able to battle through it,” Bishop said. “All of

them did really well.”

Roes, Jake Green and Nick Dazell had two hits each in the championship victory. Green

also collected an RBI single in the fifth, scoring Alec Haines.

Maple Valley gave Peterson all the runs he would need with a four-run bottom of the first inning. J.T. Schweitzer, Jake Bishop and Kyle Sherick opened the championship game with successive walks, setting the stage

for Magbaleta and Roes.

Magbaleta plated Schweitzer and Jake Bishop with a single into the left-center gap, giving Maple Valley an instant 2-0 advantage. Moments later, Roes delivered a two-run double down the

left-field line, pushing Maple Valley’s lead to 4-0.

After the Bombers cut the deficit to 4-1 in the second, Maple Valley padded its lead in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single to left field by

Dazell, scoring Walker from third.

Burien got to within 5-3 in the third, but would get no closer.

In the five games, Maple Valley outscored its opponents by a combined score of 55-25. Magbaleta and Roes led the offensive onslaught. Roes went 8-for-14 with four runs scored and six RBIs. Magbaleta was equally

as hot, going 8-for-13 with six runs and 7 RBIs.

Magbaleta served up his finest performance in an 8-4 victory over the Gig Harbor Stingrays in the semifinal game, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and

a two-run blast over the left-field fence.

“Brody was tremendous,” Bishop said. “He hit the ball hard I think every time he was given an opportunity. And Nick, he was just crushing the ball. Having those guys

come through with runners in position … it’s huge.”

Bishop credited the top of the Maple Valley lineup – Schweitzer and Jake Bishop – for the big performance by Magbaleta and Roes. Schweitzer went 4-for-11 with nine runs scored in the five games combined. Jake Bishop added five hits and seven runs scored in the five

games.

“That was the big thing, just keep getting on (the defense) and putting pressure on them,” Craig Bishop said. “As a whole, top to bottom, everybody was hitting the baseball.”
