Luckyladylightning rallied from far to notch a 1 ¾ -length victory Thursday in the featured Ashbaugh Beal Purse for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

With jockey Inoel Beato riding, Luckyladylightning ran one and one-sixteenth miles in 1 minute, 47 1/5 seconds on a fast track and paid $40.80, $10.20 and $7.60. Tim McCanna owns and trains the Virginia-bred daughter of Stormin Fever.

Orange Sherbet, ridden by Ricky Frazier, finished second but was disqualified and placed fourth for interference in the stretch run.

Fly Away, the 9-to-5 betting favorite, finished third but placed second and paid $3.20 and $2.60. Eyes On My Heart, ridden by Miguel Perez, finished fourth but was placed third and returned $3 for show.

Luckyladylightning has been a consistent filly this season, breaking her maiden in her fourth career start on July 24. Thursday’s race was her first around two turns and she responded with an extended rally from sixth place for the victory. Luckyladylightning reached the front past mid-stretch, and avoided the bumping taking place to her inside. Her overall record is 2-0-2 from six starts with earnings of $9,320.

McCanna has been on a roll lately. The leading trainer at the meet with 49 victories, McCanna sent out long shot Jersey Town to a runner-up finish to Noosa Beach in the Longacres Mile last week after Saratoga Boot captured the Emerald Derby on Aug. 15.

Assistant trainer Robert Sodergren saddled Luckyladylightning as McCanna was at Hastings Racecourse where he sent out Perfect Soul Brothers’ Intentional Foul to a fifth-place finish in the $50,000 New Westminster Stakes for 2-year-olds.

News and Notes

Leading rider Ricky Frazier rode two winners on the seven-race card, his fifth straight day with multiple wins, and leads Juan Gutierrez 96-71 in the jockeys’ standings.

Frazier needs four wins to become the first rider in track history to record four straight 100-win seasons. Frazier won the 2007 title with a record 157 wins, finished second in 2008 with 117 wins and was first last year with 155 wins.

McCanna is on pace for his 10th training title but with 49 wins would need to average a win a day to equal his own mark of 66 training wins set in 2008.

Miguel Perez improved to 3-for-7 when riding for trainer Neil Knapp with a victory on Tough Gold ($11.20) in the fourth race.
