Late goal seals the match for Kentwood, beat Hazen 1-0

Some of the information below was provided from a media release by Hazen girls soccer:

The Lady Highlanders couldn’t find the net, but Kentwood did after 79:30 minutes to get a 1-0 win Tuesday.

The win was the Conquerors second the season advancing Kentwood to first place in the North Puget Sound League 4A Cascade division with a 2-0-1 league record and a 2-0-2 overall.

It was Hazen’s first loss of the season after a 3-0-1 start and dropped the girls from first to a tie for second with Tahoma.

Hazen Coach Ken Matthews cautioned there are 13 more league games.

“You just have to look at tonight’s league games and shake your head. Mount Rainier hasn’t won a game and tonight they draw Kennedy. Kentlake wins (its) first game beating Kentridge who beat Mount Rainier,” Matthews said in the release. “Nothing is a given in this league.”

Teams didn’t have much time to celebrate or dwell on the previous game because teams are slotted to play three games this week.

“NPSL adjusted the playoffs this year; this three-game week is across the board for all of us. It’ll pay off for us in the long run, but right now we have to adjust on the fly,” Matthews said.

The Conks traveled to French Field Wednesday to face the Royals before a second away match Thursday against Tahoma.

Kentwood returns home Tuesday, Sept. 25 for a 7:30 p.m. game against Mount Rainier.
