Kent-Meridian, Kentwood athletes compete at Oregon Relays | Track and field

Members of the Kent-Meridian and Kentwood boys and girls track team competed at the Oregon Relays held April 20-21 in Eugene, Ore.

Royals boys junior Abu Kamara took first place in the 100 hurdles and fourth place in the 300 hurdles, with times of 14.68 and 40.44 respectively. Senior Jarey Suiter took 10th in the 200 meters with a time of 23.16 seconds. Junior Cartez Green also placed 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 51.58.

The 400 relay team, comprised of B.J. Phillips, Green, Henry Hammond and Suiter took ninth after running a combined time of 43.97. The 1,600 relay team took third, with Phillips, Kamara, Suiter and Camden Harris running a combined time of 3:29.78. In the sprint medley, Phillips, Kamara, Suiter and Harris finished seventh with a combined time of 3:46.30. In the field events, junior Tyler Hammer placed seventh with a leap of 20 feet, 9.6 inches. Hammond took seventh in the triple jump with a total jump length of 41 feet, 9.57 inches.

Royals girls sophomore Kariona Micks took eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.35. Junior Stephanie O’Hara took eighth in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line at 1:00.59. Senior Alexia Martin placed seventh in the 3,000 meters, finishing at 10:38.35. Their 400 relay team, comprised of Deedra Patterson, Micks, O’Hara and Jenica Rogers, took sixth, running a combined time of 50.35. In the sprint medley, Rigers, Micks, O’Hara and Jessy O’Hara took third with a combined time of 4:21.75. In the field events, senior Chelsea Muskelly took second with a vertical leap of five feet, 2.2 inches.

In the freshman 100 meter finals, Conks boys Brandon Stribling and Bailey Paladin took second and eighth, crossing the finish line at 11.67 and 11.86 respectively.Senior Danny Lunder placed seventh in the 800 meters, finishing at 2:00.35. Their distance medley team, comprised of Dasan Telford, Eric Jacobson, Robin Cheema and Lunder, took 10th, running a combined time of 11:00.29.

Conks girls Sarah Toeaina took third in the 100 hurdles, 10th in the 300 hurdles and third in the triple jump. She ran 15.70 in the 100 hurdles, 47.17 in the 300 hurdles and jumped 36 feet, three inches in the triple jump. Senior Alyx Toeaina took first in the shot put and fourth in the discus, throwing at 41 feet, 12 inches and 133 feet, eight inches respectively. Senior Mykala Benjamin took seventh in the 100 meters and 10th in the 200 meters, running times of 12.73 and 26.53.

Their 400 relay team, comprised of Tori Vallala, Toeaina, Benjamin and Madelayne Varela, took fourth with a combined time of 50.12. Their 1,600 relay team took 10th, with Amari Bradley, Carly Horn, Megan McNally and Tessa Carlin running a combined time of 4:12.05.

The distance medley team took seventh, with Nicole Charlton, Bradley, McNally and Carlin running a total time of 13:03.93. In the field events, senior Kacie Seims took fourth in the javelin, throwing it 123 feet, 7.5 inches. Junior Beth Parrish took second in the pole vault, vaulting 10 feet, 12 inches. Verela won the long jump, leaping 18 feet, nine inches, breaking her personal record by six inches.
