David Vanderwall scored six goals as Bellarmine Prep applied steady pressure on Liberty to come away with a 6 – 8 boys prep lacrosse win to open its season, Saturday, at Maywood Middle School in Renton.

Matthew Morris stole the show as Providence held off a late Juanita rally to secure its opening-day boys lacrosse win over the Rebels, Saturday at Juanita High School in Kirkland.

Morris delivered six goals and an assist for seven points on the day while grabbing nine ground balls to put the Highlanders in position for the win over the first-year Juanita program.

With Providence holding a 7 – 4 lead at the half, Juanita, which is in its first year of play in 2015 following the growth of the previously combined Lake Washington-Juanita prep program in the Kirkland area, steadily worked its way back in the game.

After being outscored 5 – 3 in the third to make it 12 – 7 Highlanders, Juanita scored four unanswered goals in the fourth to come within a single score.

Cade Alonzo had four goals and two assists to lead Juanita.

Providence (1-0-0) next faces Nathan Hale (0-0-0), Thursday, March 19 n a 5:45 p.m. start at Jane Addams Fields in Seattle.  Juanita (0-1-0) next faces Liberty (0-1-0), Wednesday, March 18 in a 7 p.m. start at Liberty High School in Renton.

Vanderwall shines as Bellarmine Prep handles Liberty in boys lacrosse opener

David Vanderwall scored six goals as Bellarmine Prep applied steady pressure on Liberty to come away with a 6 – 8 boys prep lacrosse win to open its season, Saturday, at Maywood Middle School in Renton.

After scoring three goals in each of the first and second quarters, Prep added three more in the third then pulled away in the fourth with seven to secure the win.

Vanderwall finished the night with seven points including an assist and four ground balls. Kyle O’Brien added three goals and two assists while his brother Ben O’Brien netted two goals the three assists.

Lions goaltender Johnny Smith recorded 14 saves to keep Liberty at bay.

Pierce Suarez led Liberty scoring with three goals.

Bellarmine Prep (1-0-0) next faces Curtis (0-0-0), Tuesday, March 17 in an 8 p.m. start at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma.  Liberty (0-1-0) next faces Juanita (0-1-0), Wednesday, March 18in a 7 p.m. start at Liberty High School in Renton.

Second-half Newport defense shuts down Coeur d’Alene, notches opening boys lacrosse win

Newport’s defensive unit turned up the heat in the second half as Newport High School rolled past Coeur d’Alene in its boy lacrosse season opener, Saturday at Newport High School in Bellevue.

The Knights were led by Zach Trimble on offense with five goals and three assists to lead all scorers, while Dalton Voeller had three goals and four assists and Weston Hueker had four goals.

After trading a pair of goals in the first, Newport pulled away by a goal for a 5 – 4 half-time lead.

But it was the Knights defensive unit behind 24 combined ground balls by Nate DeVine (9), Cooper Oswald (8) and Alex Stiers (7) that helped shut-out Coeur d’Alene in the third, while allowing just two in the final set, that secured the win.

In the end, the Knights put up seven goals in the fourth to pull away.

Coeur d’Alene’s Gabe Johnson had three goals and two assists.

Newport (1-0-0) next faces Lake Washington (1-0-0), Tuesday, March 17 in an 8 p.m. start at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland.
