Matt Hague had to wait a little bit longer than anticipated for the second year in a row.
Hague, a 2004 Kentwood High graduate, was selected in the 9th round — 264th overall — by the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft last Friday.
Hague, a senior third baseman at Oklahoma State University, anticipated being selected in the top five rounds. He was chosen in the 11th round last year by the Cleveland Indians, but was expected to be selected much higher.
Hague recently finished up his senior season at Oklahoma State, where he hit .360 with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs.
Hague wasn’t the only local product selected during Thursday and Friday’s draft. Tahoma’s Danny Meier, an outfielder, was chosen in the 24th round by the Houston Astros.
