Knight Raider looks to continue her tremendous 2-year-old campaign Sunday in the $60,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.
Fab Five Farm’s Knight Raider will likely be the favorite in Sunday’s race. She has dominated her past three races by 30-½ lengths combined, including a 13-length win in the Knights Choice Stakes on July 12 and a 6-¾-length victory in the Angie C Stakes on Aug. 8. She will retain her regular rider Ricky Frazier, who leads all jockeys by more than 30 wins. And as of Saturday morning, Knight Raider’s trainer Doris Harwood is tied with Tim McCanna for most wins at the meet.
“She doesn’t always break on top, but she makes up for it with great acceleration,” Harwood said.
In the Angie C, Knight Raider opened to a clear advantage so fast that by the quarter-pole she already had a 5-length lead. The test will be how the dark-bay filly handles the distance in her first attempt at a mile. Harwood doesn’t think the extra two furlongs will be an issue and quickly pointed out that the rest of the field will have to run a mile for the first time.
“(Knight Raider) is coming into the race perfect,” she said. “The distance won’t be a problem.”
Knight Raider’s toughest foe could be Sheyenne Girl who closed with a steady rally in the Angie C to finish second. The late-running style of Rewritten, who finished third in the Angie C, could also be an advantage with the added distance.
The Barbara Shinpoch Stakes is the seventh race on a 10-race program that begins at 2 p.m. Sunday
