Bears boys take third at Mat Classic | Tahoma Wrestling

The Tahoma High boys wrestling team took to the mats Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome for the annual state 4A Mat Classic wrestling championships.

Kentwood girls bring home two silver medals from state wrestling

The Tahoma High boys wrestling team took to the mats Feb. 19-20 at the Tacoma Dome for the annual state 4A Mat Classic wrestling championships.

The perennial powerhouse Bears scored 89 points as a team taking third in state behind first place Lake Stevens, 121, and Moses Lake, 103.

Tahoma jumped up the ladder from its ninth place finish in 2015 and fifth in 2014.

The Bears had a standout year bringing home the district title on Feb. 13

Kentwood came in 31st with 16 points.

The Conks girls team made a strong showing at the championship taking 10th scoring 45 points.

Junior Nick Whitehead brought home a silver medal in the 126-pound class. He pinned Lane Holland in the semifinal at 3 minutes, 26 seconds.

In the final Saturday evening Whitehead battled Bryson Beard from Central Valley losing 10-6.

Whitehead moved up a class from 2015 when he took fifth at 120 pounds.

Also finishing in the top eight for Tahoma was Austin Michalski, third at 106; Izzy Murrietta, sixth at 113; Justin Sipila, sixth at 132; Ryden Fu, sixth at 138 and Dagen Kramer fourth at 195.

Of the 14 weight classes at the Mat Classic, Tahoma wrestlers placed in six.

Kentwood

Senior Trenton Harris grappled for fifth place in the 195 class.

At 182 Matt Vanbrunt took eighth.

Girls

The Kentwood girls each brought home a silver after wrestling at the Mat Classic.

Sabrina Perez, a sophomore, took second in the 155 class. She pinned Elsa Gonzalez in the semifinals at 4:10.

Perez lost to Raquel Gray from Spanaway Lake in the final.

Senior Sara Mozeleski took second in the 135-pound class. She beat Makayla Jackson 4-2 in the semifinals.

In the final she lost to Gladdys Palma from White Swan.
