Maple Valley resident Debbie Fuchs discovered the Arboretum in 2004. She and her children began volunteering in the summer of 2009. To earn their Eagle Scout badges, her two boys built an arbor and a nursery fence.
One year later, Fuchs joined the Board as the recording secretary.
“I wanted to give back to this local treasure,” Fuchs said. “I love how the Arboretum is so accessible. The parking and admission are free, there are several entrances from the trail, road or park, and dogs are welcome.”
A substitute para-educator for the Tahoma School District, Fuchs enjoys having summers off and being available to work on the Arboretum grounds. Her favorite area is the Forest Reserve, walking the trails with her family and two dogs.
“I still enjoy spending time in the gardens weeding when I have a chance,” she said. “And I’m looking forward to seeing future improvements to the trail and new signage, so it will be an even better experience for everyone who visits.”
