The city of Kent has opened two warming shelters today to assist those who are without power and heat in their homes.
The following locations are open to the public:
Kent Commons: 525 4 Ave. N. Kent
Open until 5 pm.
Kent Senior Activity Center: 600 E. Smith St. Kent, WA 98031
Open until 4:30 pm.
Kent area residents are encouraged to take advantage of these shelters if they are without power at their homes.
Residents are advised to use extreme caution when traveling outdoors. In addition to the frozen ground
conditions, tree branches and power lines are an overhead danger due to the freezing rain.
As an additional precaution, residents are reminded that they should never bring BBQs or generators into or near
their home. Carbon monoxide (CO), a byproduct of these devices, can pose a danger to everyone in the home. CO
is a clear and odorless gas that blocks the body’s ability to absorb oxygen. Symptoms include:
Headache
Nausea
Dizziness
Fatigue
If you or anyone in your home experiences these symptoms and CO poisoning is suspected, call 911 immediately
and leave your residence.
