VanFest music festival kicks off fifth year with local bands

Planning for the fifth annual VanFest is well underway.

The main organizer, Van Wolfe, is a 20-year-old former Tahoma graduate. He started the music festival, which features mostly local and regional bands, when he was 16.

For the second year in a row, all of the profits from the event will go to the Maple Valley Food Bank.

Wolfe said he was inspired by Sasquatch, the music festival that typically takes place at The Gorge Amphitheatre near George, Wash. every Memorial Day weekend.

He said he wanted the festival to become part of the community, instead of just being located in it.

“I’ve been focusing a lot more on making it more of a community event,” Wolfe said. “It’s really something that is for Maple Valley rather than something that happens to be there.”

Since its second year – the first year it was at a barn in Enumclaw – the festival has been located at Royal Arch Park on Southeast Renton-Maple Valley Road.

The festival features more than 30 bands, most of them local, in a variety of genres.

“I’d say ‘something for everybody’ is a good way to put it,” Wolfe said.

In addition to music, the event also features local business vendors.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students (with a student ID). The festival is from 12 to 9 p.m. Aug. 15. More information on the bands playing is at vanfestnw.org.
