Tough race for legislator; fire levy in trouble

Based on the results of Tuesday’s primary election, state Rep. Geoff Simpson faces a tough road to re-election against challenger Mark Hargrove in November’s general election, and Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety is in danger of losing its primary source of funding.

Simpson, a Democrat seeking re-election to the 47th District’s Position 1 seat he’s held since 2000, was trailing Hargrove, a Republican, in votes counted through Wednesday.

Hargrove led with about 45 percent of the votes. Simpson had 40 percent, while the third candidate, Democrat Leslie Kae Hamada, had about 14 percent.

Those results would advance Hargrove and Simpson to the general election

The 47th District includes Covington, Black Diamond and some Kent and Renton areas.

Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety’s levy lid lift ballot measure, officially known as Proposition 1, was losing in the primary election results, with only about a 47 percent yes vote.

Fire chief Tim Lemon said Wednesday that district officials were “staying optimistic,” but “making up 3 percent is very hard.”

The measure proposed lifting the 1 percent lid, which would increase slightly what property owners currently pay in property tax to support the district.

For a home that costs $350,000, Lemon said, then the owner would pay an additional $38.50 per year toward the fire district or $3.20 per month.

“The fire levy lid lift is our operating revenue base. It’s what pays for the power, for fuel for our fire trucks, salaries, the daily operating expenses to run the fire district,” Lemon said.
