Championships held for students in grades six through nine

The Tahoma High School Math Team is hosting the school district’s 5th annual “Math is amazing! Championships.” for students in grades six through nine on Jan. 24. Tahoma Math Team Advisor Malinda Shirley said in a press release that the event will showcase students’ abilities to think mathematically in an exciting way.

The event consists of two new components. First, from 9-10 a.m. there will be four mini workshops to review and introduce “some key ideas” of recreational math. The actual championships begin at 10 a.m. The second new event will be team challenges, where competitors will combine their talents in small groups to determine solutions to basic skills and applications. Students can participate by registering at the Tahoma High School “Commons” on the day of the event between 8:45-10 a.m. Students should register on the early side of this timeframe to participate in the mini workshops.

The fee is $10 per person. The level of math includes Math 1, 2, 3, Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. There will be a lunch break at noon. Students may purchase pizza, salads and drinks or bring your own sack lunch. Student recognition and awards will be from 2-2:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
