The Municipal League of King County has rated candidates for the Legislature in two Covington and Maple Valley-area districts, with an incumbent the lone candidate scoring the highest marks.

State Rep. Pat Sullivan, a Democrat from the 47th District, received a rating of “Outstanding” from the non-partisan organization.

Sullivan’s opponent for Position 2 in this fall’s election, Republican Tim Miller, was rated as “Good.”

Other ratings locally included:

• In the 47th District race for Position 1, Rep. Geoff Simpson (Democrat) “Very good,” Democrat Leslie Kae Hamada “Good” and Republican Mark Hargrove “Adequate.”

• In the 5th District, Sen. Cheryl Pflug (Republican) and her opponent, Democrat Phyllis Huster, both “Very good;” Rep. Jay Rodne (Republican) “Very good” and challenger Jon Viebrock (Democrat) “Adequate;” and Rep. Glenn Anderson (Republican) “Good” and his foe, Democrat David Spring, “Very good.”

The Municipal League rated more than 85 candidates from across King County in 40 contested legislative and judicial races. Eleven candidates received the “Outstanding” rating.

The ratings are based on knowledge, involvement, effectiveness and character, according to the League. A 60-person committee studies candidates’ public records, answers to questionnaires and references. Interviews with the candidates were also part of the reviews.

The League requires the committee members, who are volunteers, to refrain from active involvement in campaigns or political parties during the election season.

Candidate questionnaires and more information about the rating process is available at www.munileague.org.

The process “is similar to a job interview for candidates, with a diverse group of citizens serving as hiring managers,” said Brad Meacham, chairman of the Municipal League.
