Snow or flood damage could bring a tax break

Property tax relief is available to owners of property damaged or destroyed by recent snow or flooding, according to the state Department of Revenue.

Affected owners can apply to county assessors to reduce the taxable value of affected properties. Relief could include a partial abatement or refund of taxes paid in 2009 and a reduction of future taxes until the property is restored, officials said.

Application forms are available from the King County assessor (King County government is linked to the Reporter’s online edition in the Community Links section) and at http://dor.wa.gov/Docs/forms/PropTx/Forms/TaxpClaimReducAssmtDestryRealPersProp_E.doc and http://dor.wa.gov/Docs/forms/PropTx/Forms/PetForPropTxRefnd.doc.
