Recycling trees is a favor for the environment

Christmas tree recycling sites organized in the Maple Valley and Covington areas by a local chapter of Rainbow Girls are examples of where environmental experts hope holiday greenery ends up.

Tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a donation of $5, trees (no flocked ones) can be taken to Royal Arch Park at 20821 Renton-Maple Valley Hwy. or to Fire Station 75 at 15635 SE. 272nd St. Proceeds will benefit Rainbow Girls, a youth organization.

Officials of King County’s solid-waste program noted that recycling trees is better for the environment, costs less than putting them in with the garbage, and leaves space in the county’s landfill for other waste, particularly non-recyclables.

Besides non-profit groups that accept or pick up trees for a donation, private companies also provide the service.

A list of city-sponsored recycling events is available from the county at http://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/garbage-recycling/tree-cycling.asp.
