King County Parks officials and Maple Valley Rotary Club members scheduled a dedication ceremony for a new picnic shelter built to honorcommunity volunteer Fred Habenicht.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Fred Habenicht Maple Valley Rotary Park, Witte Road Southeast and Southeast 221stStreet, Maple Valley.

The picnic shelter is nearly 1,000 square feet in size, and was built with a roof that features native vegetation to absorb rainfall and reducestormwater runoff.

Funding for the new picnic shelter includes donations from the Maple Valley Rotary, pro bono work from local designers and contractors,as well as support from the King County Parks’ Community Partnerships and Grants Program, which provided a grant of $115,000.

Fred V. Habenicht was a longtime community booster and environmental advocate in Maple Valley and its surroundings. He is well knownfor his tireless dedication to the community, including leading a one-day cleanup of the Cedar River that resulted in more than four tons ofgarbage removed from the river and its banks.
