The Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety will have its annual open house at 11 a.m., Saturday Sept. 12 at 22225 SE 231st St.

Directly preceding the open house, the new 9/11 memorial will be dedicated at 10:30 a.m.

Jennifer Szabo of Pacific Outdoor Living, an Issaquah based company, designed the memorial.

The centerpiece of the memorial is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

The cost of the project was estimated to be about $50,000.

In 2013, Maple Valley Firefighter Ryan Carpenter wrote a letter to the commissioner of the New York Fire Department asking for a piece of the World Trade Center to display in a public memorial.

The request was approved and now Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety owns a piece of that history.

The public is invited to attend both the dedication and open house.

Open house activities will include a helicopter display, fire engines and police apparatus. There will be refreshments, bouncy toys, jaws-of-life demonstrations, smoke house drills, junior firefighter challenges.
