Covington neighborhoods are being asked by the city’s Police Department to participate in the local version of National Night Out Across America on Aug. 5.

During the event, which has a goal of increased awareness of crime prevention, residents are urged to turn on their homes’ outside lights at 7 p.m. and join their neighbors in social activities outdoors, such as potluck meals, barbecues, walking and chatting.

Residents can register their blocks or homeowner associations as participants in Night Out by calling the Police Department at (253) 638-1110 (extension 2243).

The lights and the rest of the organized effort are a visible statement of neighborhood unity against crime, city officials said. They noted the event can strengthen police and community partnerships.
