About 75 people celebrated New Year’s Day by running and jumping into Lake Sawyer during the polar bear jump.

When the clock struck 12, youngsters up to adults ran, jumped and dove into the lake.

The water temperature was about 40 degrees.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians from Mountain View Fire and Rescue and Black Diamond police officers were on hand for assistance, but all that was needed were warm drinks and dry towels.

Winners of the longest time in the water title went to Steven Weier, 15, a Kentlake High student, and Maria Koenig, 16, who is visiting from Karlsruhe, a town in southwest Germany.

Weier won the cold water endurance title last year, but Koenig came within a few shivers of beating him today.
