SMOKEY THE BARK:195th Ave SE. Firefighters were called to smoke/steam coming from a compost pile in someone’s front yard. When Engine 92 arrived on scene they found a 10’ x 20’ wood chip pile in a driveway with steam coming from it. The firefighters felt a lot of heat coming from the pile so they dug into it then talked to the homeowner of the phone. The homeowner said that the pile was delivered a few days prior. The homeowner then showed up with a tractor to spread the bark.
Safety Message:
- Piles of bark can spontaneously combust if it is allowed to sit for a while. It is best to spread the material into your garden once you get the bark.
