Western Washington University student Stefan Irby, son of Mark and Melinda Irby of Maple Valley, received a $1,500 Barbara French Duzan scholarship and a $6,000 HACH Scientific Foundation scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The Barbara French Duzan scholarship is awarded to a senior at Western majoring in Chemistry or Chemistry-Biology combined. The student must rank in the top 20 percent of their major class and demonstrate a clear financial need to complete graduation.
The HACH Scientific Foundation scholarship is awarded to Chemistry majors seeking teacher certification.
Irby graduated from Tahoma Senior High School in 2010, has a GPA of 3.75 and is scheduled to graduate from Western in June 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. He is currently involved in chemistry research and is a lab assistant.
After graduating, Irby hopes to become a professor at a two or four-year institution.
