Sept. 21

Mountain View Fire and Rescue responded to a call where a 46-year-old man fell from a horse that was approximately 17 hands or 68 inches tall. The man fell flat on his back and had severe pain. He originally tried to drive to the hospital but the pain was too severe. The stable then called 911 and the crews arrived to find the man standing. He was unable to lie down, and had severe pain when seated. The normal procedure for an injury like this is to backboard the patient to prevent further injury, but he was in too much pain to backboard. Firefighters used a device to allow the man to allow the man to be back boarded in a seated position which was the best they could do without adding more pain to the patient. A private ambulance took the man to the hospital for further treatment.
