King County Parks, Maple Valley Rotary partner on picnic shelter project

The new picnic shelter will be slightly less than 1,000 square feet in size, and includes a “green” roof that is planted with native vegetation to absorb rainfall reduce stormwater runoff.

The new picnic shelter will be slightly less than 1,000 square feet in size, and includes a “green” roof that is planted with native vegetation to absorb rainfall reduce stormwater runoff.

Funding for the new picnic shelter includes donations from the Maple Valley Rotary, as well as support from the King County Parks’ Community Partnerships and Grants Program, which provided a grant of $100,000. The shelter is expected to be completed in early May.

Fred V. Habenicht was a longtime community booster and environmental advocate in Maple Valley and its surroundings. He is well known for his tireless dedication to the community, including leading a one-day cleanup of the Cedar River that resulted in more than four tons of garbage removed from the river and its banks. His legacy lives on at the park, and through the work that Rotary Club members continue to do in the Maple Valley Area.
