Kickstarter campaign fails but park still possible

The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council’s Kickstarter campaign ended Dec. 31 about $19,000 short of its goal

The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council’s Kickstarter campaign ended Dec. 31 about $19,000 short of its goal.

The Art Council’s target was $43,000 for the construction of a pocket park in the alley between QFC and Starbucks in Wilderness Village.

Despite a surge in last-minute donations (about $5,000 in the last 24 hours of the campaign), the project still fell short of the goal.

Kickstarter campaigns have an all-or-nothing structure. If the project doesn’t get at least 100 percent funded by the deadline, then none of the money is collected from the ‘backers’ of the project.

However, Mary Jane Glaser, the Creative Art Council’s President is not winded by the experience and they are still confident that the pocket park will be completed this year.

“We are not giving up,” she said in a phone interview. “We are positive that 2015 is going to be the year for the pocket park.”

The next step for the Creative Arts Council is still up in the air.

Glaser said she is planning a meeting with the other people who are spearheading the project to figure out what everyone wants to do next.

Attempting another Kickstarter campaign is still on Glaser’s radar, but she said the project organizers are also working on other strategies.

Glaser said the people who committed to donating through the Kickstarter campaign can still make a contribution by sending a check to the Maple Valley Creative Arts Council or by donating at their website, www.maplevalleyarts.com.

Glaser said about 150 individuals and businesses donated during the month the campaign was active.

“Even though it didn’t result in us meeting our goal by New Year’s Eve, it was a very positive experience,” she said.

“More people know about the pocket park now than before,” she added. “We’ve received overwhelming positive support for it.”
