Former Kentlake swimmer named All-American
On June 9, former Kentlake swimmer and 2012 graduate Sarah Dougherty was named to the Pocock All-American team
announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
Dougherty rowed in the varsity boat for the University of Washington for most of the season.
According to the Huskies’ athletic website, she was also invited to the U.S. National Team under-23 camp this summer.
Maple Valley native keeps Navy aircraft flying
Petty Officer 2nd Class John Clardy from Maple Valley is a aviation electrician with the Electronic Attack Squadron 139, one of 14 Navy attack squadrons based in Whidbey Island.
According to a press release, Clardy is responsible for the electrical and navigational systems of an aircraft.
The electronic attack squadron flies the Navy’s newest aircraft, the EA-18G Growler.
“The Growler is a newer aircraft that’s capable of doing things that no other aircraft can do,” Clardy said in the release. “It’s great to be able to work with this aircraft.”
July blood drives scheduled for the area
The Cascade Regional Blood Services has two drives scheduled for July.
On Saturday, July 16 from noon to 3 p.m. the bloodmobile will be at the Covington Days Festival.
And on Saturday, July 23 from 7 a.m. to noon the bloodmobile will be parked at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 25810 156th Avenue SE.
Boston University graduate
Maple Valley resident Hannah Wheeler graduated from Boston University.
Wheeler received a bachelor of arts in biology, specialization in ecology and conservation biology.
Schools recognized for conserving resources
Covington Elementary, Cedar River Middle School, Lake Wilderness, Rock Creek and Shadow Lake Elementary Schools, Tahoma Junior High and Tahoma Middle School were honored for their conservation achievements by the King County Green Schools Program.
“These 70 schools have initiated or improved sustainable practices and are teaching their students and employees about conservation,” Dale Alekel, Green Schools Program manager said in a press release.
