Kayla Dawson from Cedar Hills Middle School in Covington took first place in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest, sponsored by the King County Civil Rights Commission.

The contest asked eighth graders throughout King County to reflect on the theme of “We are the ones we have been waiting for.”

Eleanor French from Lake Washington Girls Middle School in Seattle took second and third place went to Gabrielle Russell, St. Therese School in Seattle.

The contest winners were announced at King County’s 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle Jan. 13.
