John Brockes, a sophomore at Kentwood High School, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Brockes was one of 19 students who served as Senate pages during the third week of the 2016 legislative session.
He was sponsored by Sen. Joe Fain who represents South King County in the Senate.
John enjoys playing ice hockey as a goal tender, drawing, and participating in his school’s leadership program.
“I would tell them not to be nervous, it was a good experience with good people,” said Brockes about his advice to other students interested in participating in the Senate Page Program.
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students ages 14 through 16 to spend a week working in the Legislature, getting a front row seat to how state government works. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school where they learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.
Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.
John, 16, is the son of Chris Brockes and Amy Cook of Covington.
