A family of four was able to escape unharmed from their home in unincorporated King County near Covington after it caught fire Monday, Dec. 19.

The homeowner smelled smoke at around 7:30 a.m. and opened a door to investigate. They found thick, black smoke, came from the garage. They immediately closed the door and everyone evacuated the house and they called 9-1-1.

When firefighters from Mountain View Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene they found fire in the garage and attic and were able to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the house.

The fire investigator ruled the fire accidental after he found an electrical adapter believed to have been the cause of the fire.

The adapter was a three prong to two prong adapter the homeowners used for their Christmas lights.

The investigator estimates that the cost was around $50,000 damage.
