Historic election is in the books

The results of last month’s election are final – and historic.

In local races that voters in Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond helped decide, none of the unofficial results changed by the time they were certified Nov. 25. All of the incumbent state legislators (Pat Sullivan, Geoff Simpson, Glenn Anderson, Cheryl Pflug and Jay Rodne) were re-elected, the congressional representative (Dave Reichert) was retained, a levy for Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety was defeated, and a bond for Fire District 44/Mountain View Fire and Rescue was approved. Full results are available at the King County elections Web site, which is linked through the Reporter’s online edition.

Of King County’s 1.1 million registered voters, 930,038 cast ballots – 640,907 of them by mail, 282,131 at polling places. The combined 84 percent turnout was the highest in recent memory, according to county election officials.

Another piece of history is that the Nov. 4 general election was the last scheduled time that people in King County will vote at polling places. Starting next year, voting will be completely by mail-in (absentee) ballots.

Sherril Huff, the county elections director, said the administration of the election last month, including the counting of ballots, was a “great success.”
