Green River receives approval for 7-year reaccreditation

Green River Community College learned Wednesday that its bid for reaccreditation was approved. The notification affirms the college’s high educational standards and its ability to meet the commission’s qualifications for student success.

“Green River faculty and staff work hard every day to create an excellent school,” Green River President Eileen Ely said. “I am proud of the work we do to ensure student success. It is through the comprehensive educational programs and support services that we can be so responsive to the diverse communities we serve.”

The accreditation process process included a three-day on-site evaluation conducted by an eight-member team of faculty and administrators from regional colleges. Team members met with students, staff, faculty, administrators and members of the board of trustees to evaluate the college’s ability to meet standards in education, student support, finances and infrastructure – as well as reviewed documented evidence to support the report submitted by the college.

The commission commended Green River for its dedication to student success and passion for teaching and learning. They also commended the college for the condition of the main campus facilities and campus, and the “comprehensive way Green River has created secure, healthful learning and working environments to support the institution’s mission, programs and services”.

The final report contained five recommendations for improvement, identified by the accreditation team following its April visit. Specifically, the commission recommended:

·         Ensure the college aligns its mission and core themes

·         Clarify and operationalize the college’s system of governance

·         Implement regular review of institutional policies by the Board of Trustees·         Undergo an external financial audit

·         Initiate an effective and comprehensive assessment system that demonstrates evidence of continuous improvement in curriculum development and demonstrates student learning

Green River was first granted accreditation from the NWCCU in 1967. The positive status allows the college to receive federal financial aid for students. The commission is an independent non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It assesses colleges and universities in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington to ensure the quality of education and institutional improvement.
