The King County Local Hazardous Waste Management program has helped create an app that helps consumers purchase safe lawn and garden products.

The Grow Smart, Grow Safe® app uses “science-based research to rate pesticide safety,” according to a King County press release. It rates products available in area stores as low, medium or high hazard to help shoppers make smart choices. The app also offers tips on gardening without pesticides.

The app can be downloaded free at the iTunes store.The new app is an offshoot of a publication that was first published in 1998 by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program.

The app was created in collaboration with Portland Metro and Thurston County Public Health and Social Services.
