Lagerquist was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma on Oct. 24, 2009 with the H1N1 flu and pneumonia. Oct. 26 he was also diagnosed with acute respiratory distress syndrome. He was in the intensive care for about seven weeks, sedated most of that time and breathing through a ventilator. He spent much of his time in a bed-like device called a RotoProne that slowly rotated his body to distribute oxygen evenly throughout his lungs. He experienced multiple organ failure and several life-threatening situations during his stay at St. Joseph’s.

In mid-December, Brandon’s condition improved to the point where he was transferred to a regional hospital specializing in weaning patients from ventilators. Within a very short time, Brandon was taken off the ventilator and switched to a high flow oxygen system. However, for several weeks following this change he suffered from numerous infections, skin sores and other problems which impeded his progress.

Lagerquist was born and raised in Kent where he attended Crestwood Elementary, Mattson Junior High and Kentwood High School. He earned both bachelor and master degrees in psychology at Central Washington University. He currently works as a student learning data analyst at Northshore School District. He is married, has a 3-year-old daughter and lives in Auburn.
