At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, sisters Ashley and Allysa Swanson went home with their new cat, named Patty. This was the first adopted pet of the New Year who found a home in 2011.

“There are wonderful pets waiting for their new families at the shelter,” Ken Nakatsu said, regional animal services manager. “Adding a new pet to one’s family brings a great deal of happiness to a home as well as to the animal involved. This is a positive and hopeful way to start out the New Year now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is behind us.”

Regional Animal Services of King County encourages everyone to start out the New Year in a positive and loving way by adopting or fostering a pet from the Kent regional shelter. The Kent facility houses many healthy, adoptable pets and also supports foster care for other homeless cats and dogs. Regional Animal Services also encourages media tours in order to spread the message about adoption and fostering opportunities.

Regional Animal Services pet adoption fees include:

  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • vaccinations, including rabies if the animal is over 4 months old
  • A veterinary health exam
  • Collar
  • Carrier (for cats)
  • Leash (for dogs)
  • License (varies by jurisdiction)
  • Adoption fees have been waived for adult cats during the winter flood season, which means residents can take home a new feline family member for the cost of the license.

    The shelter is located at 21615 – 64th Avenue S. in Kent. The facility is open to the public 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. Mondays; 12 noon – 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 12 noon – 5 p.m. Saturday – Sunday.

Regional Animal Services also operates the Store of Helping Orphaned Pets Everywhere (HOPE), a storefront within Kent Station Shopping Center. The Store of HOPE operates 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The public can also drop off donations for pets at the Kent shelter location, such as towels, dog toys, cat toys and kitten formula.
