Despite power outages a lack of cell phone service and fire hydrants, firefighters were able to put out a fire in Kangley on Courtney Road on Saturday, Jan 21.

At around 4 a.m., the homeowner reported smelling smoke in his home and hearing crackling in his walls.

Due to the power outage in the area and a downed cell phone tower, he was forced to drive to the main road to call 911. He and his wife made it out of the home safely with no injuries.

King County Fire District 47 was dispatched to the call. Upon arrival fire crews could smell smoke and soon after, flames began shooting out of the roof.

A second alarm was sent out at 4:36 am.

Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety, Enumclaw Fire and Black Diamond Fire responded immediately to provide assistance.

Because there are no fire hydrants in the area, firefighters had to shuttle in water from Ravensdale, about seven miles west of the scene.

Using tenders from the neighboring fire districts, the firefighters never lost water and were able to stop the fire from spreading, saving over half of the home.

Homeowners are advised to inspect their chimneys and alternative means of heat prior to use.
