Families learn of resources

Cedar Heights Middle School gets the word out

There are a lot of community-based resources to help families during good times and bad, and Cedar Heights Middle School wanted to get the word out.

So the school and its PTSA organized Family Community Night. The event Nov. 20 at the school had representatives of 14 agencies and groups, including food banks, the fire department, youth organizations and health agencies.

January Agnew-Parx, a Cedars Heights counselor, said families of all students at the Covington school were invited. “We didn’t want to try to target specific families and possibly overlook anyone,” she said, noting the economic downturn could be causing job losses in families that event organizers might not be aware of.

The open-house-style event, which ran from 5:30 to 8 p.m., also included a dinner. Food for the meal was purchased with money raised by the PTSA in a rummage sale.
