Economy’s effect on livestock raises fear

King County authorities, worried about the possible effect of the economy on livestock, are urging owners to take advantage of resources for keeping their horses and other animals properly fed.

The county’s animal care and control program has a new Web page (http://www.kingcounty.gov/safety/AnimalServices/horses.aspx) that provides contact information on horse care, horse rescue organizations and laws relating to horses.

“We encourage pet and livestock owners to get help early if they’re struggling to care for their animals,” said David Morris, an animal-control officer. “See what options are available before animals start to suffer from neglect or poor nutrition.”

The shaky economy, high prices for hay and the approaching winter are creating the potential for rough times for animals whose owners might be unable to afford feeding them.

“Our officers would much rather help early by answering questions and giving referrals to pet owners now rather than investigating animal cruelty or neglect cases later,” said enforcement coordinator Diana Toledo.
