Adam Wengreen, 14, of Ravensdale and Ben Hansen, 14, of Maple Valley have earned the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America – the Eagle Scout Award.

The two friends have chosen to celebrate and receive their awards together at a combined Eagle Award Ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel.

“We wanted to have a combined ceremony,” Hansen said. “Because we supported each other throughout our individual Eagle projects and it is something special to celebrate this accomplishment with your friend.”

The mission of the scouts is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. A large part of how the scouts accomplishes this is by developing leadership in scouts through an extensive, community centered, Eagle Scout project.

Wengreen worked with King County Parks Department and Maple Valley Soccer Association to plan, organize and build park benches located outside the new Ravensdale Sports Fields.

This project took more than 120 hours from March through June.

Hansen worked with the Tahoma National Cemetery to remove overgrown sod, lay bark and plant rhododendrons.

“I’m impressed with the respect and appreciation the young people and volunteers in our community have shown our servicemen and women,” Steve Hansen, Ben Hansen’s father, said after inspecting the project site.

Both Wengreen and Hansen are students at Tahoma Junior High.
