The teenager who drowned June 20 at Lake Meridian was Isaih Goodwin, 14, a Kentwood High School student.

Authorities said Goodwin was swimming with friends at about 6:30 p.m. in a marked swimming area at Lake Meridian Park when he began struggling and disappeared beneath the water’s surface. He was submerged for nearly 30 minutes before dive teams from the Renton Fire Department and Valley Regional Fire Authority found him.

Paramedics were able to resuscitate Goodwin and he was taken by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died.

The King County medical examiner released his identity June 23.

Lifeguards at the Kent city park, which is just west of Covington, didn’t start work for the summer season until June 21, so no lifeguards were on duty when the incident occurred.

Goodwin had just finished his freshman year at Kentwood, according to the Kent School District.

Teens and adults who knew Goodwin planned to organize a candlelight vigil for Goodwin.
