Kent-Meridian High School along with surrounding schools will be hosting the 38th annual Association of Washington Student Leaders (AWSL) conference from Oct. 12 to 14.
The three-day conference is for student leaders throughout Washignton state. It will include workshops, collaborations, speakers, community service project and other activities.
For this year’s community service project, they have partnered with Mary’s Place — a nonprofit in Seattle that helps empower homeless women, children and families reclaim their lives.
The goal for the conference is to build 150 welcome baskets and 650 milticultural hair kits.
• Welcome Baskets: The welcome baskets contain essential household items such as toiletries, garbage bags, laundry detergent, paper towels and cleaning supplies.
These welcome baskets will be given to the Mary’s Place families to turn their new apartment into a home.
The items we need are multi-purpose cleaning spray, dish soap, sponges, kitchen towels, paper towels, garbage bags, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, shower curtains and rings, toilet paper, plunger, toilet bowl brush, hand soap, tupperware, ziploc bags, broom and dust pan, duster and garbage cans.
• Multicultural Hair Kits: Multicultural hair kits provide an equitable selection of hair products for Mary’s Place diverse families.
The items needed are combs (hair pick, rat-tail, wide tooth), brush (boar bristle, Denman, paddle), hair moisturizer (shea butter, coconut oil/butter, Castor Oil), black rubber bands, black bobby pins, bonnet or satin hair scarf, hair rods and rollers, shampoo/conditioner (Shea Moisture, Carol’s Daughter, Crème of Nature, Cantu, Giovanni), African black soap, hair grease (Blue magic, Dax, etc), Murray’s Beeswax, Murray’s Pomade, hair accessories (hair ties, hair clips, rubber head bands, wooden beads, etc.), Eco Styler Gel, crochet hook.
Donations can be dropped off at the main office at Kent-Meridian from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
