Crews from Mountain View Fire respond to brush fire near Black Diamond Tuesday night

The fire started in a wooded area about 100 yards off the road in an area with downed trees and brush.

Mountain View Fire and Rescue responded to a brush fire which burned more than three acres around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon near Black Diamond.

The fire started in a wooded area about 100 yards off the road in an area with downed trees and brush. As of Wednesday afternoon the fire was under investigation, according to information provided by the fire department. The investigator believed the fire, which is in a deep duff and is difficult to completely put out, started earlier in the week.

Firefighters had a difficult time locating the actual fire because there were no trails or roads to the location. Once the crews located the  main fire they hauled hoses deep into the woods to spray water while wildland firefighters work with tools to get the fire under control. J. R. Hayes & Sons Trucking and Excavating out of Maple Valley brought a dozer to help create a fire line around the perimeter. This helped contain the fire to the area already burned and allowed us to reduce the number of personnel on scene overnight.

A crew stayed overnight while other crews arrived Wednesday morning to reinforce the line, put out hotspots as well as put equipment back in service in daylight. Firefighters will continue to check on the fire given its location deep in a duff.

In addition to JR Hayes & Sons, Mountain View Fire received support from Maple Valley Fire, The Soup Ladies, South  Puget Regional Handteam — part of Mountain View Fire and Rescue — and King County Sheriff’s Office.
