Public service was the top order of business at the Covington City Council meeting Tuesday.

The council members honored the volunteer of the year and the commissioner of the year.

Amy MacLurg was presented with a plaque commemorating her as the 2010 Volunteer of the Year.

MacLurg had a dream of being a lifeguard at the Covington Aquatic Center and refused to let her autism block her dream.

She completed the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course the winter of 2010 and she volunteers at the pool four days a week as a junior lifeguard. She works three or four hour shifts four days a week.

MacLurg has raised awareness about autism in the community and water safety.

Sean Smith was recognized as the 2010 Commissioner of the Year.

Smith has served on the Planning Commission for two years and was elected chairman in 2010.

He chaired the committee during the downtown zoning and design regulations process. He provides reports to the City Council on the commission and spent many hours attending meetings hearings relating to zoning.

Smith has shown his dedication to improving the community and quality of life for all.
