The city responded by waiving temporary banner permit fees to help businesses get more from their advertising. Due to the continued voice of the small businesses in the community, the city of Covington is extending the temporary banner display time frame from 30 days to 90 days.

Covington’s existing sign code states that temporary banners, like special sale or event banners, can be displayed for only 30 days time within a one year period.

“Small businesses rely on temporary banners to stimulate walk-in business,” City Manager Derek Matheson said. “They are concerned they aren’t getting enough time to display those.”

Covington City Council voted Tuesday, Oct. 26, to extend the 30 day display time frame to 90 days to allow businesses the opportunity to gain better results and get good use out of their banners.

The time frame extension will take place beginning Nov. 3 and last through April 30, 2011. During this time, the city’s Community Planning Department and Planning Commission will review the temporary banner sign codes to determine if permanent changes should be made. The City Manager will also continue waiving the temporary banner fees as well, during this time.
