Cedar Heights Middle School locks down after weapon rumor

Covington police declared it an unfounded situation

Covington police responded to a lockdown at Cedar Heights Middle School Tuesday, which was eventually declared an “unfounded situation,” according to Police Chief Kevin Klason.

Klason said school officials reported early Tuesday that a student might be bringing a firearm to school. Police contacted the student in a classroom, and found him or her not in possession of a firearm. Klason said the individual was less than 13 years old.

“We made sure parents were aware and counselors were involved,” Klason said. “The school and counselors are taking care of it.”

Kent School District Spokesman Chris Loftis said he wasn’t sure where the rumor of a firearm came from, but that the school always errs on the side of caution.

“Whenever you have a rumor or report of a weapon on campus you have to take every precaution,” he said.

Loftis said parents were notified by letter and Robo-call during the day.
