Car and one victim pulled from river

A car that crashed into the Green River last Friday was pulled out Tuesday with the body of a 2-year-old boy inside. A second boy, 13, missing since the accident wasn’t found, however. The search for him continued.

The river’s water level, too high and swift through last weekend to allow the submerged car to be extracted, dropped enough for a more aggressive recovery effort.

Emergency crews from surrounding agencies, including a Black Diamond-area fire department, were unable to find the two boys who were in the automobile when it went into the river near Auburn.

Authorities said a 16-year-old girl lost control of the car on Green River Road before it went into the swift-flowing river just north of Auburn Municipal Golf Course at about 8:30 a.m. last Friday.

The driver escaped the car before it sank and reached the road, where she flagged down a passing motorist who called for help. But the boys, who wer related, remained missing and presumed drowned.

After several hours of searching, divers found the submerged car, but the water was too swift and murky to recover it.

Fire District 44/Mountain View Fire and Rescue, which serves the Black Diamond and Auburn areas, was among the agencies responding to initial calls for help.

According to Dan Bosch, a battalion chief for Auburn Regional Fire Authority, the car’s driver said she tried to return to it and rescue the boys after she swam to shore, but was swept away by the current about 80 feet from where the car entered.

The King County Sheriff Department is the lead agency for recovery efforts.
