Five Tahoma High School math team members will compete at the National Mu Alpha Theta convention in Boston July 8-13.

The competitions include algebra through calculus.

Competing at the calculus level are Emily Burlison and Amanda Peng. Marcus Coselman will compete at the pre-calculus level and Malise Yun, and Alex Link will compete at the algebra 2 level.

Peng will also present a talk on “DNA and Mathematics”.

Coselman will speak on “The Math Behind Actuarial Science”.

Link will discuss “The Mathematics behind the Boston Marathon”.

In addition to the testing, all of the club students have worked on a 40-page themed scrapbook reviewing the club and community activities.

Mu Alpha Theta is an international organization that is dedicated to supporting interest in math. At the high school level, Mu Alpha Theta promotes strong scholarship in applied mathematics.

The theme chosen was MATH-AGASCAR to parallel the Dreamworks movie series.

The committee consisted of Lauren Maulden, Niky Sarmah, Rachel Culp, Kendall Elliot, Malise Yun, Lauren Baek and Allison Satko. Mrs. Teresa Messenger coordinated the effort.

College students Sean Messenger and Dan Shirley helped coached the team during the summer. Dr. Thomas Brown and Burlison coached the math team during the school year.
