Penley, who is left handed, has always loved letters. She has enjoyed drawing letter forms since she was a child including intricate Chinese characters. She began her formal education in calligraphy not long after she discovered the art form.

She has exhibited her work in numerous shows and has received recognition in several juried exhibits. Penley earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Western Washington University. She is a former graphic designer and creative director, and most recently was director of communications — prior to her retirement in 2008 — at Weyerhaeuser in Federal Way.

Penley is a new member of the Maple Valley Creative Arts Council and lives in Olympia with her husband. This calligraphy show will run until April 27.
