Proper respect needs to be shown to our nation’s flag | Letter

On behalf of VFW Post 5052 Maple Valley/Black Diamond, I would like to thank the organizers of both the Maple Valley Parade and the Covington Days Parade for their continued dedication to patriotism by allowing our group to lead the events with the American Flag.

On behalf of VFW Post 5052 Maple Valley/Black Diamond, I would like to thank the organizers of both the Maple Valley Parade and the Covington Days Parade for their continued dedication to patriotism by allowing our group to lead the events with the American Flag.

We are humbled and honored by this gesture and take very seriously our obligation to dignify the celebrations.

Having said this, it is somewhat disturbing to our organization to witness almost a total lack of respect shown by those onlookers who, when our nation’s flag approaches, do not rise out of their seats, do not remove their hats, do not hold their hands over their hearts, and who continue their conversations with each other both face to face and on their cell phones.

To those that do show respect and honor to our flag we offer our sincere appreciation for their allegiance and hope that others will follow suit in the future.

Bill Stephens,

Senior vice commander
