Black Diamond mayor unprofessional and violated rules | Letter to the Editor

At Jan. 7 Black Diamond City Council meeting, like a child who didn’t get her way, the mayor seemed to say “I’m taking my marbles and I’m going home.” Rather than let the city move forward with business when she expected she wouldn’t agree with the council’s vote on simple items, she pulled most things off the agenda.

Council member (Ericka) Morgan came to the meeting to do the people’s work. She made a motion to change a resolution on the agenda about the council working committee membership, and she listed out reasons. She had a plan in place to ensure her proposal followed the rules.

The mayor argued and wrongly inserted herself in council decisions, and the mayor misused her authority over the city attorney by getting the city attorney to say that the mayor could just pull things off the agenda. The mayor followed only the rules that suited her, and broke rules that did not suit her. Such as the very basic rule that allows the council to vote on motions brought to the floor in council meetings.

The city wasted time and money that night, and the mayor acted unprofessionally and unilaterally in violation of city rules.

I am concerned because she tried to take advantage of new council members that received my vote and the vote of about 70 percent of the town. I want the campaign platform those council members stood for to get done, not the mayor shouting them down in meetings.
