Emergency medical facilities in the town center of Covington received a thumbs down from the Planning Commission June 17.
The Covington Planning Commission met to vote on a recommendation to allow a 24-hour emergency medical facility in Covington’s town center and whether to allow zoning for a hospital.
On the second day of hearings for the master planned developments The Villages and Lawson Hills, two Black Diamond City Council members recused themselves from the process, leaving three to decide whether to approve the permit application.

According to Battalion Chief Dave Bille, the first rescue call occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the Cedar River. Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety received a call three people were stuck in the river near the Riverbend Mobile and RV Park in the 17400 block of state Route 169.

The Black Diamond Fire Department reported the mother of a 16-month-old girl saved her daughter’s life after the girl was found floating in Lake Sawyer Friday night about 8:30 p.m.
A message sent from spokesman Tim Perciful stated the mother revived the girl by providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The girl was taken to a nearby hospital following treatment at the scene from emergency medical personnel.

The Fourth of July is right around the corner and the city of Covington has made a few changes in regulations concerning fireworks.
At the May 25 City Council meeting, the members unanimously passed an ordinance amending the current fireworks code, making an individual’s first two offenses civil infractions, but the third will be criminal. Also the Kent Fire Department staff and police officers can cite individuals who violate the fireworks law.
It may be a sign of the times, but Covington decided it is time to change the city’s panhandling laws.
The City Council approved an ordinance at the May 25 meeting outlawing panhandling directed at vehicles. The measure also prevents panhandling on private property unless the owner gives permission.
The ordinance directs the staff to begin a public education campaign to encourage residents to donated to charities rather than to panhandlers.

Derek Eager captured the gold medal in the discus with a throw of 179-10 Friday, May 28 at the 4A state meet. Despite a ferocious wind and rain storm, Eager took the event by more than 10 feet.
It was Eager second medal of the 4A state meet at Mount Tahoma. He took the silver in the shot put Thursday. The Tahoma senior will go for his second gold in the javelin Saturday.
